Laser Dentistry, Laser Deep Cleaning & Canker Sore Treatment

What laser dentistry is, how it works, and what it can do — from laser deep cleaning for gum disease to fast, painless canker sore treatment.

The Advanced Smiles team is excited to share one of the more advanced tools in modern dentistry — laser dentistry. Here's what it is, how it works, and what it can do to enhance your smile.

What is laser dentistry?

A laser is an instrument that produces a very narrow, intense beam of light energy. In dentistry, when a dental laser comes in contact with tissue, it causes a reaction in which the light can remove or shape tissue. The use of lasers in dentistry generally falls into three categories: disease detection, soft tissue treatments, and hard tissue treatments.

Lasers can help locate dental calculus (tartar) beneath the surface of the gums, and can even aid in the detection of oral concerns in their early stages. For soft tissue treatment, lasers are minimally invasive and generally involve taking away less tissue than conventional methods.

What laser dentistry can treat

  • Canker sore and cold sore pain
  • Gum disease and gum inflammation
  • Gum reshaping
  • Exposing wisdom teeth

Benefits of laser dentistry

  • Faster healing time
  • Less post-operative discomfort
  • Patients are less likely to require stitches
  • The laser helps sterilize the treatment area

Laser deep cleaning

Periodontal (gum) disease occurs when the tissue and bone that support your teeth become infected. To effectively treat gum disease, a deeper cleaning is often needed. Our hygiene team uses the laser along with scaling and root planing to remove infected tissue and accelerate healing.

Laser dentistry and canker sores

The gentle laser light is focused directly on a canker sore to promote healing through photo-biostimulation deep within the tissue. It is a quick, painless procedure, and no anesthetic is needed.

Are dental lasers safe?

Yes — dental lasers have been used since 1990 with a strong track record of successful results. Dr. Ernest De Paoli is a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, the profession's independent source for laser education and credentialing, and our hygiene team is trained and certified in the clinical use of soft-tissue lasers.
